I understood, in the clearest possible way, that we were living on a tiny oasis of life, surrounded by an immensity of death. — William Shatner, 2022

Okay, this is kind of the whole point, isn't it? We ain't God.

We are the creation. He is the Creator. It's all about His plans, His purposes, His glory.

But we are sinful and deluded. We are all about our plans, our purposes, our glory.

Like spoiled children we stomp around, declaring our opinions, demanding our rights, justifying our inadequacies and failures.

We see all the misery and pain in the world around us, and shake our fists at the Almighty, demanding He defend Himself ... how can a "good" God allow such goings-on? Who appointed Him our prosecutor and judge?

I am reminded of the line in Jim Croce's song, You don't tug on Superman's cape ...

We have lost our minds.

We have forgotten that we are indeed "living on a tiny oasis of life, surrounded by an immensity of death."

We are blind to our own fragility. Our sin and our pride have deluded us to the point of utter insanity. We are a speck of dust shaking our fist at a hurricane, daring it to move us.

Truth is costly. It demands total acknowledgement of our failure and His sovereignty, and our total inadequacy to live apart from Him. It demands acceptance of His Son's sacrifice and payment for our sin. It demands that we turn from living for ourselves and our own glory, and instead live for Him and for His glory, eternally.

Many of us reject the Truth, considering that the cost is too steep a price to pay. So we swallow the blue pill and live on happily satisfied in our delusion.

Delusion is born from the Lie, which is deadly. The Lie says you can live your life your own way without consequences. Choosing the Lie will feel good and right for a time. Maybe even for your entire life. But there will come a day when all of us will bow before Him and acknowledge His sovereignty – some of us apparently acknowledging Him through clenched teeth and fists.

We humans are not quite as autonomous as we think. We don't have as much control and influence as we think. We don't understand or know as much as we think we do. We are fatally damaged.

He has made a Way for us to turn back to Him and our source of life, if only we will.
